EPA Mandate!!! ATTENTION BUILDERS, REMODELORS AND TRADE CONTRACTORS! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted new regulations affecting contractors performing renovation work in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This regulation is called "Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Program" (RRP). Starting April 22, 2010, any renovation work (including painting) which disturbs painted surfaces in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities built before 1978 must be performed by persons trained in lead-safe work practices, with specific responsibilities for a new discipline of "CERTIFIED RENOVATOR." To become a Certified Renovator, a person must attend an 8-hour EPA-approved training course from an accredited training provider. As a benefit to local contractors, the HBAJ held this certification class six times since December 2009. Even though the law went into effect April 22nd, there are still many contractors who need to be certified. Although our office is not holding this class during July or August, there may be other local association offices offering the class during the summer months. Call Builders Education Services and Training (BEST) of Michigan at 517-646-2572 for more information. Here at the HBAJ office, we may schedule a class session again in the fall. If you are interested in being on a call/email list to receive more information as it becomes available, please call 517-783-4800 or email hbaj@sbcglobal.net. *******************************************************************
